We were called to investigate why a range would not heat up correctly. What we found was that someone had converted the 240V range outlet to 120V. It originally had an electric range, then had a gas range installed then replaced again with an electric range. This is legal to do but it was done incorrectly. They used a regular wire nut to connect the aluminum wiring to a short piece of copper wire. You must use listed connectors when you connect aluminum to copper to avoid galvanic corrosion.

Galvanic corrosion will cause the connection to disentigrate and build up heat which can cause a fire. We installed a new 2pole breaker and used listed connectors to connect the aluminum to copper conductors. We also installed "blanks" around the breaker to fill in the spaces around the "thin" breaker we had to use to make this a code compliant installation.
